How to Ask Someone Out Over Text (Without Making It Weird)

August 28, 2025 · 6 min read

Asking someone out over text is harder than it should be. You want to be clear, but not pushy. Confident, but not arrogant. Specific, but not bossy. And you want to leave them room to say no without making it weird.

Here's a simple framework that works — plus 12 actual messages you can adapt for any tone.

The 4-part framework

  1. Lead with the ask. Don't bury it. The first sentence should make it clear you're asking them out.
  2. Be specific about the plan. "Want to hang out sometime?" is bad. "Want to grab coffee Thursday at 5?" is good.
  3. Give them an out. "No pressure either way" or "if you're free" makes it easy to say yes — and easy to say no without it being weird.
  4. End with a question. Make it easy to reply.

12 messages you can adapt

Casual

Hey [name], I've been wanting to ask — would you want to grab coffee sometime this week?
Hey [name] — want to grab a drink Thursday or Friday? No pressure if you're busy.

Confident

[name], I'd like to take you out. Are you free this weekend?
Hey [name], I've been thinking about you. Want to get dinner next week? I'll pick the place.

Cute

[name], this is me officially asking you on a date. No take-backs. Coffee? 🌸
Hi [name]! Small question, big feelings: would you want to grab coffee this weekend? ☺️

Funny

Statistically, 100% of people who say yes to a date with me have a great time. Sample size: small. Confidence: high. [name], want to grab something this week?
[name], I have scientifically determined that we should hang out Thursday. Peer review says yes.

Sweet

I've liked talking to you, [name]. I'd really like to take you out — coffee or a walk, whatever feels easy. What do you think?
Hey [name], I've been looking forward to seeing you again. Coffee this weekend?

Flirty

I have plans for us Thursday. Coffee at 5. Wear something you feel good in.
[name], I've been thinking about you more than I should. Drinks this weekend?

What to do if they say yes

Send a real invitation. Not another text — an actual invitation card with the date, time, and activity. Use our free Date Invitation Generator to build one in 60 seconds, then send it on WhatsApp. It's a small move that makes a big impression.

What to do if they say no (or don't reply)

Be cool. Reply with something short and gracious — "No worries, hope you have a good week" — and then actually leave them alone. Don't follow up. Don't ask why. Don't try again in a week. If they wanted to, they would have said yes.

Rejection over text is a gift: it's quick, it's clear, and you can move on without wondering. Take the gift.

One last thing

The actual wording matters less than you think. What matters is: did you ask? Did you make it easy to say yes or no? Did you respect their answer? Send the text. The worst case is a no — and a no is just information.
